Congestive heart failure symptoms in young adults
JOHN R. Patient Information Handout. Optimal outpatient treatment of systolic heart failure has three goals that should be pursued simultaneously: 1 control of risk factors for the development and progression of heart failure, 2 treatment of heart failure, and 3 education of patients. Control of risk factors includes treating hypertension, diabetes, and coronary artery disease, and eliminating the use of alcohol and tobacco. All patients with heart failure should be taking an angiotensin-converting enzyme ACE inhibitor or angiotensin-receptor blocker.

The primary method of diagnosing diastolic dysfunction, a type of heart failure in which the heart isn't able to relax fully after each beat, is with an echocardiogram ECG and, sometimes, other imaging tests. Leading up to such a test the condition may be suspected based on symptoms shared by other types of heart failure. Sometimes a blood test to detect elevated levels of a protein released by the heart in response to elevated pressure within the organ also is used to help diagnose heart failure with diastolic dysfunction.

If you're living with congestive heart failure CHF , it's important to be aware there are certain medications that could exacerbate your condition. Others may interact with medications you're taking to treat congestive heart failure. If you have heart failure, check with your doctor before taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements.
