Prison strip search procedure
Sodexo Limited, which runs HMP Peterborough , admitted that it had carried out illegal strip-searches on three women and a woman who was in the process of transitioning to male. One prisoner was told to remove and dispose of a sanitary towel. No adequate reasons were given for the search and no proper records were kept, despite evidence that the process can risk re-traumatising vulnerable women — many of whom will have experienced sexual or physical abuse. The claim against the company was settled, but the women maintained the claim against the government on the basis that it had contracted out the operation of a prison to a private corporation and was therefore incumbent to ensure that appropriate supervision and monitoring was in place.

I'm sure Alex can add much more to my answer - I have been in two different B-cat local prisons, I only once had to sit in the scanning chair - on my initial reception. It's simply there to detect any objects that might be - not being crude - up you backside. I've made many visits to B-cat locals and have never been scanned in such a way. However they do employ airport like security checks.

HMP Peterborough inmates were illegally strip-searched
No, it's not the latest ridiculous plastic surgery procedure — the "labia lift" is a new search technique used at a Denver women's prison, and the ACLU says it's degrading and even dangerous. Here's how one inmate at the Denver Women's Correctional Facility not pictured described the process:. The lift is treated differently by officers, but generally involves spreading your legs and parting your outer labia so an officer can do a visual inspection of your genitals.

Once in the gym, they stood facing the wall for more than an hour, still unsure why, until the guards started taking groups of four to 10 into the adjoining bathroom and beauty shop. There, they were ordered to strip. Standing shoulder to shoulder, women on their periods were asked to remove their tampons and pads. Some stood bleeding on themselves or the floor.
